The mortiser accessory expands your possibilities with the Hovercraft Mk-II. With two precision machined skates that use brass guidepins, and sixteen ABEC-9 bearings, it clamps and rides on your workpiece like a train, and cuts mortises of any size, length, and depth. You can cut centered mortises. You can cut offset mortises. No special cutting tools are needed: use your favorite upcut spiral router endmill. Setup is a breeze thanks to precision CNC engraved scales with 1/32" increments, and machined thumscrews, dial a mortise on the fly and go.
But wait - there is more! With the mortiser kit's enclosing feature, you can drive the bearings past the cutter center. That opens up a possibility where, like a router table's fence, you can expose only a small part of the cutter. Then your trim router becomes a jointer. You can make multi-pass cuts, reducing the chance of tearouts. You can cut rabbets, flush trims, with ease. You can cut dado's with ease. You can make very precise straight cuts that follow the straight edge of your jointed and planed workpieces. You can cut a channel with straight sides and a flat bottom for inlays. You can cut offset v-grooves for an architectural look. You can cut coves for a finger groove or liquid channels for cutting boards. You can create t-slots or dovetail channels for making spline joints, biscuit holes, t-molding grooves, or creating unique decorative effects.
Did we mention it can grab infinitely variable workpiece thicknesses? It can cut mortises with surgical precision, whether you are trying to make a tiny 1/16" decorative mortise in the middle of a 1/4" thin veneer, or a massive 3/8" mortise in the middle of a 8" beam. In dual skate mode it can clamp on workpieces as thick as 3.25". With inner skate only it can cut mortises as far as 4" from an edge of a workpiece.
